MT4 on XM — Platform Overview and Key Specifications

MetaTrader 4 was developed by MetaQuotes Software and released in 2005. It became the global standard for retail forex trading due to its combination of a functional charting interface, reliable automated trading via Expert Advisors, and low system requirements. XM has supported MT4 since its earliest days as a broker and provides it free across all account types except the Shares Account.

How to Download, Install, and Connect MT4 to Your XM Account

The MT4 download and setup process takes approximately five minutes from start to first login. You need an XM real or demo account with your MT4 account number and password — both sent by email when your account is created.

01
Open an XM account and verify your email. After registration, XM sends your MT4 account number (a numerical ID) and password to your email address. Keep these — they are different from your Member Area login credentials.
02
Download MT4 from your XM Member Area. Log in to xm.com, navigate to the Platforms section, and click on MetaTrader 4. Download the installer for your operating system (Windows EXE or Mac DMG). Save and run the installer — accept all default options. Installation takes 2–3 minutes.
03
Connect MT4 to your XM server. When MT4 opens, go to File → Open an Account. In the search box, type "XM" to find your XM server. Select the correct server (your Member Area shows your server name — it will look like "XMGlobal-Real" or similar). Click Next.
04
Log in with your MT4 credentials. Select "Login to existing account," enter your MT4 account number in the Login field, enter your MT4 password, and ensure the correct server is selected. Click Finish. MT4 will connect to the XM server and your live balance will appear in the Navigator panel.
05
Verify connection and add instruments. A green connection indicator in the bottom-right corner confirms you are connected. Right-click in the Market Watch panel to add or hide instruments. You can now open charts, place trades, and install indicators or EAs.
Two separate passwords: Your Member Area password (used at xm.com) is different from your MT4 password (used to log into the trading platform). If you need to reset your MT4 password, do this through the Member Area — you cannot reset it from within MT4 itself.

MT4 Charting Tools — Timeframes, Built-In Indicators, and Drawing Objects

MT4's charting environment is the core of the platform for most traders. You can open multiple charts simultaneously, apply any combination of indicators, and customise colors, grid lines, and display settings per chart.

The 9 chart timeframes available on MT4

M1 (1 minute), M5 (5 minutes), M15 (15 minutes), M30 (30 minutes), H1 (1 hour), H4 (4 hours), D1 (daily), W1 (weekly), MN (monthly). These cover the standard intervals used by the vast majority of manual forex traders and swing traders. For traders who need intermediate timeframes like H2, H3, or H6, MT5 is required.

Installing custom indicators on MT4

Custom MQL4 indicators (.ex4 files) can be installed by placing them in the Indicators folder under the MT4 data directory. Access this folder via File → Open Data Folder in MT4, then navigate to MQL4 → Indicators. Drag the .ex4 file into the folder, then restart MT4 or right-click and refresh the Navigator panel. The indicator will appear in the Custom Indicators section of the Navigator.

Order Types and Trade Execution on XM MT4

MT4 on XM supports three execution types and four pending order types. Understanding the difference ensures your orders work as expected when the market reaches your target price.

Market order

Executes at the best available price at the moment of submission. This is the fastest order type. On XM's NDD system, 99.35% of market orders execute within one second. The price you click to trade at may differ slightly from the price at execution during fast markets — this is normal market slippage, not a broker manipulation issue.

Four pending order types

  • Buy Limit — Buy when price drops to a specified level below current price
  • Sell Limit — Sell when price rises to a specified level above current price
  • Buy Stop — Buy when price rises to a specified level above current price (breakout entry)
  • Sell Stop — Sell when price drops to a specified level below current price (breakout entry)

Stop-loss and take-profit

All order types support stop-loss and take-profit levels set at order placement or modified on any existing open position. Stop-loss and take-profit are server-side orders on XM's system — they execute even if MT4 is closed or your internet connection is down, because they are processed on XM's server rather than your local platform.

Expert Advisors on XM MT4 — How to Install, Activate, and Run Automated Trading

Expert Advisors (EAs) are automated trading programs written in MQL4 that execute trades based on programmed conditions. MT4's EA support is one of its most valued features and a primary reason many traders choose it over competing platforms.

How to install an EA on MT4

01
Obtain the EA file (.ex4 format). EAs are distributed as .ex4 compiled files or .mq4 source files. Both work — .ex4 is the compiled, ready-to-use version.
02
Place the file in the correct folder. In MT4, go to File → Open Data Folder → MQL4 → Experts. Place the .ex4 (or .mq4) file in this Experts folder.
03
Restart MT4 or refresh the Navigator. Right-click on Expert Advisors in the Navigator panel and select Refresh. The EA will appear in the list.
04
Attach the EA to a chart. Drag the EA from the Navigator onto the chart you want it to trade. A settings dialog will appear — configure parameters and ensure "Allow live trading" is checked under the Common tab.
05
Enable AutoTrading. Click the AutoTrading button in the MT4 toolbar (it should show as green). The EA is now active and will execute trades automatically when conditions are met.
EAs only run while MT4 is open and connected. If you close MT4, the EA stops running. If your internet connection drops, the EA cannot place new orders (though existing stop-loss and take-profit levels remain active on XM's servers). For continuous EA operation, use a VPS — XM offers one located near its London data centre.

MT4 Limitations — What the Platform Does Not Offer Compared to MT5

MT4 is well-suited to its core purpose of forex and CFD trading, but there are specific limitations that matter for certain trader types. Knowing these upfront prevents having to switch platforms after you have committed.

  • 9 timeframes only — No H2, H3, H6, M2, M3, or other intermediate frames available in MT5
  • No built-in economic calendar — You need an external source or plugin for economic event data
  • Single-thread strategy tester — Large optimisations are significantly slower than on MT5
  • No Depth of Market — You cannot see bid/ask volume at different price levels
  • No fund transfers between accounts — Must use the Member Area for fund management
  • XM Shares Account not available — MT5 is required for individual share trading
  • No longer actively developed — MetaQuotes stopped new MT4 development; future updates will not come
  • 4 order types only — No Buy Stop Limit or Sell Stop Limit; no partial order fills

Access MT4 free with your XM account

MT4 is included at no cost for all XM Standard, Micro, Ultra Low Standard, and Ultra Low Micro account holders. Download after registration from your Member Area.

Yes. XM's Web Trader runs MT4 directly in any modern browser without installation. Log in with your MT4 account number and password. It provides live charting, trade execution, and account management. Expert Advisors and the Strategy Tester are not available in Web Trader — those require the desktop application.
Yes. MT4 on XM fully supports Expert Advisors written in MQL4. EAs run locally on the machine where MT4 is installed, so MT4 must remain open and connected for the EA to function. For continuous 24/5 EA operation, XM offers a VPS service near its London data centre. Note that MT4 EAs (MQL4) cannot run on MT5 — the programming languages are incompatible.
XM uses two separate systems. The Member Area (at xm.com) uses your email address and Member Area password for account management, deposits, and withdrawals. MetaTrader 4 uses your MT4 account number (numerical) and a separate MT4 password for platform access. Both sets of credentials are sent by email when your account is created. Reset your MT4 password through the Member Area, not through MT4 itself.
Yes. MT4 is available on iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play). The mobile apps support live quotes, charting with all 9 timeframes, trade execution, account monitoring, and price alerts. Expert Advisors cannot be run on mobile — EA execution requires the desktop application or VPS.
